How long have you been learning English?

Since i was in 2nd grade so ... about 13 years (including studies) but the best results gave me staying and going to school in US - since then I haven't learned anything new because living there for 2 years gave me excellent american - english. I really encourage you to learn English - it's very helpful and you can communicate anywhere on the planet

What exactly do you mean? I fell pretty comfortable speaking English but American - English. Too bad I don't practice it everyday - but I watch movies and read...I hope I won't forget it

Do u sound american? Because very often one can speak v. good english but still has a foreign accent. How about you?

hecate - I was quite young (9 & 11yrs) when I went among all those americans and I think that this age is very good, because you learn quick and your mind is like a sponge. I haven't met anyone who told me that I was Polish - unlesss I told him earlier, so I suppouse my accent is quite good. Greetings for You all

I have been learning English for hmmm... 10 years?? i don't remember when i started to learn it because i was very little child - more or less 5 years now I can say i know this language quite good I have been going to extra lessons for 4 years - now I'm at advanced level I definitely love this language so much that in the future I will probably do something connected with this language

I've been learning English for about 23 years, basically since I started speaking in general. I used to speak British, now I live in the US so I switched to American and love it. I guess people can't tell that I'm not originally from here, seem very surprised when I tell them it's not my native tongue.

I've just left high school so for the next 4 months i'm going to improve my english by myself...my grammar isn't good i have problems with tenses and i have also a big problem with lerning new words...

There are quite many so-called mnemonic techniques; i.e. memory tehniques thanks to which you can remember vocabulary better without just learning it by heart. I suppose you could try and google them out, but here are some of them - I think they are most helpful for majority of people:
-try to make stories with the words you want to learn, that is, if you want to remember 10 words, invent a story with them. The more abstract, or even stupid, the story the better
-find associations between the English words and their Polish meanings (e.g. similar sounds, number of letters, colours of the objects they describe, etc.)
-find links between the words you already know and the ones you are trying to learn, this way you will "hook" the new vocab onto the old one, and when you recall the old words, the new ones should come up too
-do not learn easily-confusable words the same day as you are almost sure to mix them up
-when it comes to simple, concrete vocab describing everyday objects, it is useful for most people to stick post-it's (the little yellow sticky notes) on the objects whose names you want to remember

it depands on your age . i ve been living in the UK since i was 10 and knew how to speak properly when i was 12 . (im 17 now )The younger you are the better and faster you can learn . It also depands on the amount of time you spend with people who speak in the same language . When i 1st came i went to an english school straight away and had no contact with polish people therefore i could learn faster . i would say my english is better now than my Polish , my polish accent is gone and sometimes i have difficulties to say what i wanna say in Polish which is kinda shameful when i visit Poland ! Love English language though .

So I learn english about 8 years, but it isn't good... I have a lot of problems with speaking. But now I'm workin' on it, I'm going every day on english lessons(daily 2,5h) so I suppose it'll be better when I came back to school

Well, about 15 years, including university studies - an ultra-intensive course Now I try to teach it, sometimes successfully, sometimes not quite much Luckily I don't have to teach kids any more, only adults.

I learn french about hm... when I was 4 years I went to France and more I understand when I listening than when I must say anything. In english too but when I musn't use this language I didn't do it.

This thread's name is a bit awkward btw.

Well, been learnin for like 11 years or so.
My grammar and spelling seems proper now, and what Im proud of is my accent.
Especially after some of my british lads told me that it sounds just cool

Plus, after putting some work in english theater and comedy (I just love it) Im able to 'switch' between different accents x]
I can suite myself to sound like american, british, nigg.. I mean black guy.
I can act using my voice to talk like someone from movie or a game.
Acting using different voices and accents is lots of fun, and I'd recommend it to everyone who wants to develop such skill or better accent.

Btw theres a stereotype that you need to move to USA or UK to learn such stuff decently, well its a myth, you can basically learn to speak as any of native americans without leavin your country
